What is Playstation VR?
Playstation VR is a virtual reality system that works with the Playstation 4 gaming console. Playstation VR features full stereoscopic 3D and 360-degree positional tracking.

When did PSVR launch?
Playstation VR launched globally on October 13, 2016.

What do I need to play?
In addition to the base unit, you also need a PS4 (any model, original, Slim or Pro), the PS4 camera and at least one controller. The Dualshock 4 that comes with all new Playstation 4s will allow you to play many games, but players may also choose to purchase the PS Move controllers or the PS Aim.

What do I get with the base unit?
The contents of the base unit include the headset, the necessary cables, stereo earbuds, the breakout box, and a Playstation VR demo disc. All PSVR owners can also download Playroom VR for free.

Can I buy PlayStation VR bundled with Move controllers and/or a PS4 camera?
At launch there was only an official bundle with the headset, camera move controllers and VR Worlds in America.

Since then, other countries now offer bundles with the V2 camera. Other bundle combinations may also be available. Please check with your local retailer.

How much will it cost?
At launch the core system will cost $399 USD (?€399, £349, $549 CAD, A$550 AUS) for the base unit. Different regions may offer different bundles. Games will span a wide range of prices, similar to traditional games.

On 28th of August, PlayStation Blog US announced a permanent price drop for PlayStation VR in the US and Canada.

The core system will now include the camera as well as the PSVR headset cost $399 USD / $499 CAD.

The VR Worlds bundle which includes the headset, camera, VR Worlds game and two move controllers will now cost $449 USD / $579 CAD.

Are their different hardware versions of PlayStation VR?
Yes. On 2 October 2017 a revised version of PSVR CUH-ZVR2 was announced of the PlayStation Blog Japan.

What's the difference between the old and new versions?
There shouldn't be any performance difference, the most significant different was that the new PU allows an HDR signal to pass-through to a TV. Please see History > Hardware Revisions for a full list of changes.

When can I buy the new version?
It will be launched in Japan on 14 October 2017. There is no launch date for other territories yet.

Can I use my V1 headset with a V2 breakout box, to gain HDR pass though?
No, it will not work. Though it has similar ports, they have different cables. Source: PlayStation Ultimate PSVR FAQ. Tested by u/devedander here.

Can I try it now?
You can find demo locations here (North America) or here for Europe. Demos in other locations to be added.

Can I use a launch or slim PS4, or do I need to upgrade to PlayStation Pro?
All Playstation VR games are playable on the original PS4 and the PS4 slim. A PlayStation 4 Pro is not required. All games will still work at a minimum of 60hz reprojected to 120hz, or 90hz or 120hz native.

What benefits does a PS4 Pro have over a stock PS4 when using PlayStation VR?
Mostly increased graphical fidelity, but it is very much dependant on the game and how the developers of the game have chosen to take advantage of the Pro. It could mean increased sharpness, especially on things like text. Better anti-aliasing, or improved framerate. Some games there is no difference at all.

What does the 'breakout box' do?
The breakout box (also known as the 'processor unit' or 'PU') does three things.

  1. It takes the VR video output from the PS4 and splits it so that it is formatted properly for a standard TV.
  2. It processes the 3D audio.
  3. It takes the IMU (sensor) data from the headset and packages it over USB to the PS4.
What about headphones?
In order to achieve the full 3D audio effect, users must use headphones. Surround sound speakers will not provide the same experience. Standard stereo headphones will work best and simulated-surround or multi-driver headphones are not necessary.

Headphones need to feature either a 4 pole OR a 3 pole 3.5mm jack to work with the PlayStation VR, which plugs into the breakout box.

Headphones with a USB connector will not work, nor will any kind wireless headphones. You will not get 3D audio if you bypass the breakout box and use the PlayStation Gold headset wirelessly. You will need to use the 3.5mm cable that came with the Gold headset.

Can I still use my own headphones with CUH-ZVR2?
Yes, it had been confirmed by a redditor that the revised CUH-ZVR2 headset with integrated headphones still has a 3.5mm jack.

What is the difference between the old (v1) and new (v2) PS4 camera?
Apart from the way it looks, nothing. The old camera is square and the newer camera is a round design.

What is the different between the old and new Move controllers?
The only different between the old controllers and the new one announced on 2nd October 2017 is the USB port. The older ones use a mini USB port to charge and the newer ones use a micro USB port.

There is no physical difference between the old and newer 2016 twin pack Move controllers. They both fit on the older charging docks and still have the same size battery. They just come in a box of two with PlayStation VR branding, instead of being sold separately.

I have Move controllers from the PS3. Will they work?
Yes, your PS3 Move controllers will work.

Do I need Move controllers to play PlayStation VR?
The majority of games can be played with an ordinary Dualshock 4 controller, however there are some titles which require Move controllers and you won't be able to play those games without them.

How do I find out which games require Move controllers?
Please check the community games list. If only a PS Move icon is displayed, Move controllers are required.

Move Controller Poll
r/PSVR was surveyed by u/Dixonian89, to see how essential people think Move controllers are the PlayStation VR experience.

57% voted: Just as essential as the headset itself. Make sure to have them day one to have the full VR experience (if you can afford them now get them now, if not get them as so as you can)

36% voted: You'll be fine with out them AT FIRST. You will definitely want to buy them as soon as you can in order to experience all that VR has to offer. ( You will definitely want them eventually)

What is the difference between the old (v1) and new (v2) Dualshock 4 controllers?
The newer controller has a transparent gap in the touch pad, so that the light from the light bar can shine through. The only purpose of this is to identify player 1 and player 2 controllers more easily. It is not used for tracking.

You can also use the v2 controller with a USB cable, which gives it very slightly lower latency than using it with bluetooth.

Can I play any game in VR?
Any standard game on the PS4 is playable through cinema mode (a giant simulated screen), but it will not provide 3D or head tracking support for those games. Only games designed specifically for VR will have full VR functionality.

How does the Cinematic Mode work?
The PlayStation VR Cinematic Mode features a trio of (simulated) viewing sizes: 117 inches, 163 inches and 226 inches. Sony says that the default 163-inch size will encompass your entire field of view, while the gargantuan one will require you to move your head from side to side if you want to see everything at once.

Will Cinematic Mode allow me to watch 3D blu-rays?
It wasn't possible at launch. However this functionality was added in the 4.50 PlayStation system software update.

Does PlayStation VR use HDR?
No Playstation VR does not use HDR. Source PS4 Pro: The ultimate FAQ

How much room do I need?
The PSVR headset is tracked using the camera and internal sensors. To avoid any lapses in tracking, the light sensors on the headset must be in clear line-of-sight of the camera. Because the camera has a field of view of ~85 degrees, the tracking area has a radius roughly equal to the distance from the camera. That means if you are two feet away from the camera, you can go about two feet off-center in any direction. If you're six feet away from the camera, you can be tracked about six feet off center in any direction. The tracking is a bit more complicated than that, but using that idea as a guide will give you a good idea on what kind of space you'll need. For many seated experiences with a stationary head position (think something like Battlezone or a driving game), you can be fairly close to the camera without losing out on tracking. For something where you need your arms tracked (think The London Heist or Job Simulator), you may want to be a little further away.

Can PSVR do 'roomscale'?
While the PSVR system has great tracking, it depends on line-of-sight. As such, Sony is encouraging developers to only create games that are forward facing and either standing or sitting; they are not encouraging developers to make games where players walk around their room.

Can I use PSVR with glasses?
The PSVR should fit comfortably around most glasses.

How many games are there on the included demo disc and which games are they?
US 18 games, EU 8 games, Asia 18 games.

All demos will be downloadable from the corresponding region's PlayStation Store.

Parts of VR Worlds are included in the demo disc, but the full version of VR Worlds is a separate product.

How should I clean my PSVR?
Please refer to the Lenses and Cleaning page.
